This is my little rainbow. She is obsessed with rainbows and rainbow colored things- including fruits and vegetables thanks to Today I Ate a Rainbow!
E has SPD (sensory processing disorder) which has stopped her from eating certain foods due to the texture. When she has issues with a fruit or vegetable I find a different way to offer them instead of giving up. But getting her to try things a second time has been a challenge.
When I heard about Today I Ate A Rainbow, I knew this was something I had to look into for her. I thought if she saw how food could look like a rainbow, she'd be more inspired to TRY new things. And over the past month, it's totally worked! She now likes some fruits and veggies raw, some fried, and some frozen that she couldn't eat before. All because of the power of color and presentation!
"Today I Ate a Rainbow.
And it tasted GREAT!
Today I Are a Rainbow
And it was on my PLATE!
My body is so healthy and happy TOO
Today I Ate a Rainbow how about YOU!?!"
Today I Ate A Rainbow was designed for children 3 years old and up. A brilliant mom, Kia Robertson, decided to create a program that inspires children to eat their fruits and veggies in a fun colorful way. She has written a book, created charts, shopping lists, fun magnets, tee shirts, and an amazing website filled with useful knowledge for parents and children.
Kia, like E and myself has texture issues with certain foods. But she realizes the importance in eating all of the colors and how everyone can enjoy food hassle free! She has fabulous tips on her website along with meal ideas and how to handle picky eaters. Not to mention a fun area for kids to play!
E was sent The Today I Ate a Rainbow Kit. It comes with a Rainbow Chart that has all of the colors plus fruits and veggies that are each color, 26 magnets, a shopping list, and The Rainbow Bunch Book! E loves charts that show how well she has done for the day, and it being a rainbow has made it even more special. She is able to track her progress and see what she needs to eat to get all 5 colors.
The Rainbow Bunch Book is awesome! It helps children realize why it's important to eat their fruits and vegetables. Some of the Rainbow Bunch characters suffer from obesity, poor concentration, lack of energy, malnutrition, and weakened immune systems. The Rainbow Bunch Book shows how the Rainbow Bunch change their eating habits by incorporating all of the colors of the rainbow into their diets so they can become healthy. You can read more about the characters online. This is truly an amazing tool to help your child to understand the importance of fruits and vegetables, especially when they don't see how lack of energy and being sick relate to their eating habits.
Why is it important to eat different colors? Well each fruit and vegetable contains phytonutrients that give them their color and they help our bodies in different ways. Some of the top phytonutrients Dr. Sears suggest are: "soy, tomato, broccoli, garlic, flax seed, citrus fruit, melon, pink grapefruit, blueberries, sweet potato, chili peppers, and legumes. Honorable mention: green tea, red grapes, papaya, carrots, kale, nuts and seeds, eggplant, artichoke, cabbage, brussel sprouts, onions, apples, cauliflower, dried apricots, pumpkin, squash, spinach, mangos, and shiitake mushrooms."
A kid needs a minimum of 5 fruits and veggies every day! So, that is perfect that there are 5 colors of the rainbow. Today E has had: raspberries, strawberries, tomatoes, carrots, peaches, banana, artichoke, raisins, blueberries, and blackberries.
